Easy Irish Soda Bread
A rustic, traditional Irish bread that requires no yeast or long rising times. This hearty bread features a crisp crust and dense, tender interior with a slightly tangy flavor. Perfect alongside soups, stews, or simply enjoyed with butter and jam.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Bake Time: 40–45 minutes
Total Time: 55 minutes
Servings: 8
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1¾ cups buttermilk
- (Optional) 1–2 tablespoons sugar for a touch of sweetness
- (Optional) ½ cup raisins or currants for a traditional touch
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt (and sugar if using).
- Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir just until a shaggy dough forms — don’t overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead 3–5 times until it comes together. Form into a round loaf and place on your baking sheet.
- Cut a deep “X” across the top of the loaf using a sharp knife (this helps it cook evenly).
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let cool on a wire rack for at least 10–15 minutes before slicing.
Tips for Success:
- No buttermilk? Make your own by mixing 1¾ cups milk with 1½ tablespoons lemon juice or vinegar. Let sit for 5 minutes.
- Don’t overknead — this bread is best rustic and tender.
- Delicious served warm with Irish butter, jam, or even cheese.
